One of the things I'm proudest of isn't a listing or a client win — it's watching someone I believe in build something real. Steve had the skill and the drive to run a bookkeeping practice long before it had a name. What he needed wasn't someone to hand him a plan; he needed a partner who could help him see the business side of what he was already good at.
That's how Smith Bookkeeping came to be, and it's why I hold a stake in it today as a silent partner. I helped with the structure — the entity decisions, the pricing, the systems — while Steve did what he does best: the actual work with clients. That division is important. My job wasn't to run his business for him. It was to make sure the business underneath his skill could actually hold weight.
That experience shaped how I approach every consulting relationship since. Talent gets you in the door. Structure is what lets you stay.
